Boranup Forest

Margaret River is approximately 3 hours south of Perth by road and makes a refreshing weekend getaway. With 250,000 people visiting the area every year, it still hasn’t lost its small town attraction. Whilst the area is well known for its wineries and breweries, the area has so much more to offer and an area we want to explore is Boranup Karri Forest.

We start our whirlwind visit by leaving Perth Friday afternoon and reach Margaret River before night fall. Some choose to sleep under the stars, and there would have been a time that would have appealed to me, but these days it’s all soft beds, spa baths and breakfast in bed for us.

Up early to visit the Margaret River Visitor Centre, we pick up some maps and a bit of local knowledge. Armed with a well detailed map of Boranup Karri Forest and surrounding area, it’s time to head off to do a bit of sight seeing and drop in to watch local artisans crafting unique furniture from centuries old timber. I’m in awe of the potters revealing things of beauty from lumps of earth, to seeing sand turned into fine glassware.

On the way back to Perth we take a slight detour via Augusta, 42Km further south. Known for its local tourist attraction, Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse it’s definitely worth the visit. We really enjoyed a slow drive through the Boranup Karri Forest where the luxury of a SUV makes all the difference. We see some magnificent ancient Karri trees reaching heights of 60 metres and more. As we make our way through the forest a rest spot is provided with a viewing platform. Take the time to breath in the air, listen to the bush, the birds, and the wind moving through the trees.

So many sights to see in so little time, we head back to Perth with the promise that we’ll be back.
