Perth street art, paint the town red… green, blue & yellow

Table of Contents
Stretching from the city centre to the suburbs, Perth street art is ever changing. Buildings and laneways are becoming urban tapestries of colour with street art revitalising our public spaces. What were once blank walls are now transforming into living landscapes, bringing colour and personality to the streets.
Although there is an abundance of street art in the city, it is now more and more apparent in suburban life. From Fremantle to Bassendean and Victoria Park our streets are becoming prettier with the addition of striking street art. If you’re not sure where to start to see some creative masterpieces, below we show you some suburban eye candy listed by suburb, to entice you out to begin your own search for some of Perth’s best street art.
Maylands
Move over Hosier Lane, Perth’s suburb of Maylands is ranked as one of the three coolest suburbs in Australia, thanks to its gritty and artisanal edge. You don’t have to walk far in Maylands to see spectacular street art transforming the buildings and laneways. Late last year paintball bandits hit the uber cool suburb of Maylands hitting many of the stunning murals. Luckily our photography captured these images forever.

Mount Lawley
Igniting the walls with bold geometric masterpieces and contemporary characters, local and international artists are revitalising otherwise blank and boring areas with some of the best street art in Perth.

Inglewood
The bursts of colour on our walls could easily have you thinking these photos are from the hip and trendy Melbourne instead of Perth street art.

Bassendean
Many local businesses have commissioned some colourful murals to adorn the otherwise plain and boring sidewalls of their cafes and restaurants. One little cafe even had their dog painted on the wall, a little gesture that indicates this place is not only a great place for a coffee or bite to eat, but also a pet friendly place to take your canine best friend for a puppuccino and admire some Perth street art.

Victoria Park
But just as art speaks in different ways it is not an everlasting story. What is here today, may be painted over, defaced or the building demolished tomorrow. Maybe knowing that it may not be here forever is what makes us appreciate Perth street art more.

Fremantle
Fremantle offers some striking murals, from colourful zebras on shop walls to privately commissioned murals on private houses. It also has some stunning grungier murals on the old Woolstores building. From Fremantle to Bassendean and Victoria Park our streets are becoming prettier with the addition of striking street art.

Perth street art is fun and vibrant as artists are being commissioned to brighten and rejuvenate otherwise lifeless walls. Artists are using walls of buildings and houses as canvases speaking directly to their audience.
There is something about illicit public artworks that is gaining genuine appreciation and acceptance and for as long as there are open spaces and a means for this creative expression I am sure it will be bombing our walls. Perth street art was once an underground movement and today is an accepted form where boring gritty laneways morph into colourful murals.
Claremont
Some amazing birdlife dons the subway in Claremont, by one of my favourite artists, Anya Brock.

Street art creates a cultural tourism allowing visitors to come to an area to experience and enjoy the artwork. Unlike a gallery, people can return to the area, increasing the economics by spending time and money in the many restaurants and cafes that commission local artists to create inspiring pieces. Street art is making its way and becoming a trend for backdrops in wedding photos.
Have you visited a cafe with some interesting street art? Do you know any suburbs I’ve missed that also have lots of buildings rejuvenated with murals? Which suburb do you think has the best Perth street art?

Wow, you have discovered some interesting street art in Perth. I especially love the vibrant musicians and the colorful wildlife.
Street art is really taking off all over the world now. I love these examples, particularly the cow and the zebras. Wonderful to see such colourful art brighten up the suburbs.

The cow and the zebras is by my favourite artist, Anya Brock. She’s done many spectacular pieces around Perth.
Wow, this is fantastic! Honestly, I didn’t expect Perth to jump on the street art bandwagon but it’s great! The last time I was in Perth was in the 1990s – it’s good to see Perth in this new avatar 🙂 #FarawayFiles
Perth is a huge surprise to many, not just for our street art. If you make it back here you will see a huge difference, we have grown up, but still laid back and friendly.
Well look at little old Perth. It’s not a city I would have ever described as funky in the past but I stand corrected. Think I might need to head over soon for a street art fix! Thanks for sharing on #FarawayFiles
Katy we have some great street art in Perth now, move over Melbourne as Australia’a street art hub. If you plan a trip here let me know.
