Sacher Torte in Vienna
Who has enjoyed the Viennese tradition, the ultimate indulgence of eating fine cake, the original Sacher Torte in Vienna?
So rich, so dense…
This dense chocolate cake, with apricot jam between layers and covered in dark chocolate is served with whipped cream. It is so rich Charlie and the Chocolate Factory would be impressed.
I inhale, take a bite, my heart is singing. Then I’m taken back to when splendor was the only theme on offer. When opulence dripped from every wall, I see Mozart trilling on his flute surrounded by chandeliers, baroque armchairs and gilt-framed oil paintings. It is sheer decadence, ‘a symphony in chocolate’ old world indulgence and this is truly how the other half live. This is truly cake for music lovers.
I pause, exhale.
Then as I’ve eaten my very last bite, wham! I’m bought back to reality. The waitress brings the bill and I read the total. Certainly with the richness of the Sacher Torte and the dent in my wallet it’s clear that is a luxury only enjoyed on special occasions.
Sacher Torte, the cake for music lovers.
Have you tried Sacher Torte and did it make your heart sing?
Oh Vienna, read about how we bought our tickets and really heard the music of Mozart.

Hi you two! I was just reading your other Vienna post and had to laugh at this one. I’m going to Vienna next week with a friend and all she keeps talking about is the sacher torte. I can’t wait to see if it lives up to the hype!
Again (because this was the case on different websites), this post is from 2014 and even in year 2020 it is very relevant and fresh. Vienna is indeed timeless. Happy 2020!
This cake looks delicious! I can’t believe I didn’t try it while I was in Vienna. A must do on my next visit there!

Going in two weeks! Will definately try it- looks delicious! Any other tips for Vienna? Thank you
I am sure you will have a great time Steph… and love the Sacher Torte. I have another post I wrote http://wp.me/p4q6ZP-w0 which you may find useful. Not sure how long you will be in Vienna, but it is so close to do daytrips to Prague, Budapest or Bratislava all of which are lovely.
VERY nice description….I hope to get to go Vienna this winter, and I will definitely try this treat with some of the Viennese Coffee that I have heard about. Just thinking about it is making ma smile. Thanks!
I’d love to hear what you think after you’ve tried it. Vienna in winter would be lovely, it was Autumn when we were there so saw all the beautiful colours of the countryside. Very pretty indeed.
Short and sweet, I love this article. You did a wonderful job describing your experience. I am now craving the cake. I am sad that we missed this when we were in Vienna. Guess Ash and I have to go back.
Alex, once you’ve experienced Sacher Torte in Vienna you may become a “cake snob”, its happened to me.
Ahh this is my favorite! I never ate it in Vienna though!
One for the bucket list maybe?
*drool*
Yum! And here I am, drinking my diet protein shake…
*bangs head, repeatedly, on keyboard*
Ouch, that’s reality
I would love to try some original Sacher Torte with whipped cream and some skinny latte when in Vienna. I have not been there yet and I have never tried this lovely delicacy! Great place recommendation!!
Trust me, you won’t regret it.
